Born in São Paulo in 1964, Martelli began playing guitar at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of Brazil's most renowned guitarists, including Henrique Pinto and Edelton Gloeden, and later went on to study with the legendary Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. Martelli's early career was marked by a series of impressive performances and awards. In 1985, he won first prize in the prestigious Villa-Lobos International Guitar Competition, which helped to launch his career as a soloist. He went on to win numerous other awards and competitions, including the Francisco Tarrega International Guitar Competition in Spain and the Tokyo International Guitar Competition. Martelli's performances are characterized by his technical precision, expressive phrasing, and deep musicality. He has a particular affinity for the music of the Baroque and Classical periods, and has recorded several albums of works by composers such as Bach, Scarlatti, and Mozart. He is also known for his interpretations of Brazilian music, including works by Villa-Lobos and other composers. One of Martelli's most notable performances was his debut at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1997. He received critical acclaim for his performance of works by Bach, Scarlatti, and Villa-Lobos, and was praised for his "dazzling technique" and "sensitive musicality." Since then, he has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House. In addition to his solo career, Martelli is also an active chamber musician and collaborator. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, the Assad Brothers, and the Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Martelli's recordings have received widespread critical acclaim and have won several awards. His album of Bach's lute suites was named one of the best classical recordings of the year by the New York Times, and his recording of Villa-Lobos's guitar works won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 2002. Throughout his career, Martelli has been committed to promoting classical guitar music and supporting young musicians. He has taught masterclasses and workshops around the world, and has served as a judge for several international guitar competitions. He is also the founder and artistic director of the São Paulo International Guitar Festival, which brings together guitarists from around the world for performances, workshops, and competitions. In recognition of his contributions to classical music, Martelli has received numerous honors and awards. He was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Brazilian government in 2005, and was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2010.
