He was the son of a local schoolmaster and showed an early interest in music. At the age of 23, he moved to Vienna to pursue a career in music. In Vienna, Diabelli studied with several prominent composers, including Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. He also became friends with Franz Schubert, who was a fellow student at the Vienna Conservatory. Diabelli's early works were heavily influenced by the classical style of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Diabelli's most famous work is his "Variations on a Theme by Diabelli," which he composed in 1819. The theme was a simple waltz that Diabelli had written himself, and he invited several other composers, including Beethoven, to write variations on it. Beethoven's contribution, which is now known as the "Diabelli Variations," is considered one of his greatest works. In addition to his work as a composer, Diabelli was also a successful music publisher. He founded his own publishing company in 1818 and published works by many of the leading composers of the day, including Beethoven, Schubert, and Carl Czerny. Diabelli's own compositions were varied and included works for piano, chamber music, and choral music. His piano music was particularly popular and included several sets of variations on popular themes, as well as sonatas and other works. One of Diabelli's most significant works for piano is his Sonata in F minor, Op. 168. This work, which was composed in 1823, is a virtuosic piece that showcases Diabelli's technical skill as a pianist and composer. It is also notable for its use of chromaticism and unconventional harmonies. Diabelli's chamber music includes several string quartets and quintets, as well as works for other combinations of instruments. His String Quartet in A major, Op. 41, is a particularly fine example of his chamber music. This work, which was composed in 1814, is a lyrical and expressive piece that demonstrates Diabelli's skill at writing for strings. Diabelli's choral music includes several masses and other sacred works. His Mass in F major, Op. 66, is a particularly fine example of his choral music. This work, which was composed in 1818, is a grand and majestic piece that showcases Diabelli's skill at writing for voices. Diabelli continued to compose and publish music throughout his life. He died on April 7, 1858, in Vienna, Austria, at the age of 76. Today, he is remembered as a talented composer and publisher who made significant contributions to the classical music of his time.More....
