Born on May 25, 1950, in Charleston, West Virginia, Ann was the daughter of renowned composer George Crumb and his wife Elizabeth Crumb. Ann's musical journey began when she started taking piano lessons at the age of six. However, it was her singing talent that caught the attention of her parents and music teachers. Ann's parents recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She started taking voice lessons and soon became a part of her school's choir. After completing her high school education, Ann enrolled at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where she studied voice and opera. Ann's professional career began in the early 1970s when she started performing in various operas and musicals. Her breakthrough performance came in 1976 when she played the lead role of Rose in the Broadway production of "The Threepenny Opera." Her performance was widely acclaimed, and she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Over the years, Ann continued to perform in various operas and musicals, both on Broadway and in regional theaters. Some of her notable performances include the role of Fantine in "Les Misérables," Lily Garland in "On the Twentieth Century," and Betty Schaefer in "Sunset Boulevard." She also performed in several operas, including "The Turn of the Screw," "The Rape of Lucretia," and "The Ghosts of Versailles."
