He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents recognized his musical talent at an early age. Golub began playing the violin when he was just four years old, and he quickly became a prodigy. Golub's parents were both members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and they encouraged their son to pursue a career in music. He studied with some of the most prominent violin teachers of his time, including Ivan Galamian and Josef Gingold. Golub also attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz. Golub's talent as a violinist was recognized early on, and he won numerous awards and competitions throughout his career. In 1952, he won the National Music Camp Concerto Competition, and in 1954, he won the prestigious Naumburg International Violin Competition. These early successes helped to launch Golub's career as a soloist. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Golub performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with many other orchestras throughout the United States and Europe. In addition to his work as a soloist, Golub was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio, which was formed in 1962. The trio performed together for over 20 years and recorded numerous albums. Golub was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young musicians. He taught at the University of Chicago, the Chicago Musical College, and the Music Institute of Chicago. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians. One of the highlights of Golub's career was his performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1970. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Golub's reputation as one of the world's greatest violinists. Golub continued to perform and teach throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but he began to suffer from health problems in his later years. He passed away on December 1, 1998, at the age of 66. Throughout his career, Elliott Golub was known for his technical mastery of the violin and his passionate performances.
