Founded in 1979, the ensemble has become one of the most respected and celebrated wind symphonies in the United States. The Wind Symphony was established by Dr. Brian Lamb, who served as the ensemble's conductor for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the Wind Symphony grew in size and reputation, attracting some of the most talented musicians from across the country. Today, the ensemble is led by Dr. Matthew Mailman, who has continued to build on the legacy of his predecessor. The Wind Symphony is comprised of approximately 50 musicians, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and community musicians. The ensemble's members are selected through a rigorous audition process, and only the most talented and dedicated musicians are chosen to perform. Over the years, the Wind Symphony has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Midwest Clinic. The ensemble has also been invited to perform at numerous music festivals and conferences, both nationally and internationally. One of the Wind Symphony's most notable performances was at the 2009 Midwest Clinic, where they received a standing ovation for their rendition of John Mackey's "Aurora Awakes." The performance was hailed as one of the highlights of the conference, and cemented the Wind Symphony's reputation as one of the finest wind ensembles in the country. In addition to their impressive performances, the Wind Symphony has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, the ensemble was named the winner of the American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance, an award that recognizes excellence in the field of classical music. The Wind Symphony has also been a finalist for the same award in previous years. The Wind Symphony's repertoire is diverse and eclectic, ranging from traditional classical pieces to contemporary works by some of the most innovative composers of our time. The ensemble has premiered numerous new works, including pieces by composers such as David Maslanka, Frank Ticheli, and John Mackey. Despite its many achievements, the Wind Symphony remains committed to its mission of providing a high-quality musical education to its members, as well as to the wider community.
