The ensemble is made up of talented musicians who are dedicated to performing a wide range of classical music pieces, including contemporary works and traditional repertoire. The founding of the UNCG Wind Ensemble was the result of a collaboration between Dr. John Locke, the Director of Bands at UNCG, and Dr. Robert Reynolds, a renowned conductor and educator. The two men shared a vision of creating a world-class wind ensemble that would showcase the talents of the university's music students and provide them with a unique opportunity to perform at the highest level. Over the years, the UNCG Wind Ensemble has become one of the most respected and acclaimed ensembles of its kind in the United States. The ensemble has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events, including the Midwest Clinic, the College Band Directors National Association Conference, and the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference. The UNCG Wind Ensemble is made up of approximately 50 musicians, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and community members. The ensemble is led by Dr. Kevin Geraldi, who has been the Director of Bands at UNCG since 2013. Dr. Geraldi is a highly respected conductor and educator who has led the UNCG Wind Ensemble to new heights of excellence. One of the highlights of the UNCG Wind Ensemble's history was its performance at the 2015 Midwest Clinic, which is one of the largest and most prestigious music conferences in the world. The ensemble was selected to perform at the conference after a highly competitive audition process, and its performance was met with critical acclaim. The ensemble's program included works by composers such as John Mackey, David Maslanka, and Percy Grainger. In addition to its performance at the Midwest Clinic, the UNCG Wind Ensemble has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. The ensemble has been invited to perform at the College Band Directors National Association Conference on multiple occasions, and it has also been recognized with the Sudler Flag of Honor, which is one of the highest honors that a wind ensemble can receive. The UNCG Wind Ensemble is also committed to commissioning and performing new works by contemporary composers. The ensemble has commissioned works by composers such as John Mackey, David Maslanka, and Joel Puckett, among others. These new works have helped to expand the repertoire of the wind ensemble and have provided students with the opportunity to work closely with living composers.
