Role:EnsembleI Virtuosi di Lugano is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1984 by the Italian violinist and conductor, Claudio Abbado. The ensemble is based in Lugano, Switzerland, and is known for its exceptional performances of classical music from the Baroque era to the present day. The founding of I Virtuosi di Lugano was a result of Claudio Abbado's desire to create a chamber orchestra that would bring together some of the most talented musicians from around the world. Abbado had previously served as the principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic, and he wanted to create an ensemble that would allow him to explore a wider range of repertoire and work with a more intimate group of musicians. The ensemble's first performance took place in 1984 at the Lugano Festival, where they performed works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The concert was a great success, and I Virtuosi di Lugano quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. Over the years, I Virtuosi di Lugano has featured a rotating cast of musicians, with many of the world's most renowned soloists and chamber musicians performing with the ensemble. Some of the ensemble's most notable members have included violinist Viktoria Mullova, cellist Mario Brunello, and pianist Martha Argerich. One of the highlights of I Virtuosi di Lugano's career was their performance at the 1992 Salzburg Festival, where they performed a program of works by Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven. The concert was widely praised for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming, and it helped to establish I Virtuosi di Lugano as one of the world's leading chamber orchestras. In addition to their performances at major festivals and concert halls around the world, I Virtuosi di Lugano has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to their name. Their recordings have received numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2000 for their recording of Brahms' Piano Quartets. Throughout their career, I Virtuosi di Lugano has remained committed to exploring a wide range of repertoire, from the Baroque era to the present day. They have performed works by composers such as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Shostakovich, as well as contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and György Ligeti. In addition to their performances and recordings, I Virtuosi di Lugano has also been involved in a number of educational initiatives, including workshops and masterclasses for young musicians. They have also collaborated with a number of other organizations, including the Lugano Festival, the Lucerne Festival, and the Salzburg Festival. Despite the many changes that have taken place over the years, I Virtuosi di Lugano has remained true to their founding principles of exceptional musicianship, innovative programming, and a commitment to exploring a wide range of repertoire. They continue to be one of the world's leading chamber orchestras, and their performances and recordings are widely regarded as some of the finest in the classical music world.More....
