His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a court trumpeter and director of the musicians in Eisenach, and his uncles were also musicians. Bach was the youngest of eight children, and his parents died when he was only ten years old. He was raised by his older brother, Johann Christoph Bach, who was also a musician. Bach began his musical education at a young age, learning to play the violin and the harpsichord. He also sang in the choir of the local church. At the age of 15, he was sent to study at the prestigious St. Michael's School in Lüneburg, where he continued his musical education and learned to play the organ. After completing his studies, he worked as a musician in various cities, including Weimar, Arnstadt, and Mühlhausen. In 1707, Bach was appointed as the court organist and chamber musician in Weimar. During his time there, he composed many of his early works, including his organ preludes and fugues. In 1714, he was appointed as the concertmaster at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen. It was during this time that he composed some of his most famous works, including his Brandenburg Concertos and his solo violin and cello suites. In 1723, Bach was appointed as the cantor and director of music at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. He held this position for the rest of his life, and it was during this time that he composed some of his most important works, including his Mass in B Minor, his St. Matthew Passion, and his Goldberg Variations. Bach was a prolific composer, and his works spanned a wide range of genres, including choral music, instrumental music, and keyboard music.
