His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Cord showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Cord's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under renowned pianist and composer, Friedrich Gulda. Cord's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1963, Cord made his debut performance at the Vienna Musikverein, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and his career took off from there. Over the next few years, Cord performed in some of the most renowned concert halls in Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 1967, Cord won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. The competition was one of the most challenging and highly regarded piano competitions in the world, and Cord's victory cemented his place as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. Cord's career continued to flourish throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of the time, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. In addition to his performances, Cord was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 50 albums throughout his career, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann. His recordings were critically acclaimed and won numerous awards, including several Grammys. Cord's talent and dedication to his craft earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, and in 1991, he was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin in 1995. Despite his success, Cord remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and record well into his later years, and his talent and passion for music never waned.
