Genre:ChamberLaura Gilbert is a renowned classical flutist who has made a name for herself in the world of music. Born in New York City, Gilbert grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer, so it was only natural that Gilbert would develop a love for music. Gilbert began playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with some of the best teachers in the country, including Julius Baker, Samuel Baron, and Jean-Pierre Rampal. Gilbert attended the Juilliard School, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree, and later went on to earn her Master of Music degree from Yale University. Throughout her career, Gilbert has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. One of Gilbert's most notable performances was her solo debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1991. She performed the world premiere of Christopher Rouse's Flute Concerto, which was written specifically for her. The performance was a huge success, and Gilbert received critical acclaim for her virtuosic playing. In addition to her performances as a soloist and with orchestras, Gilbert is also an active chamber musician. She has performed with many chamber ensembles, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Woodwind Quintet, and the Da Capo Chamber Players. Gilbert is also a founding member of the ensemble Les Amies, which is dedicated to performing music written by women composers. Gilbert has received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1993, she was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. She has also been a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. In addition to her performing career, Gilbert is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at many prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, Yale University, and the Manhattan School of Music. Gilbert is currently a professor of flute at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. Gilbert is also an advocate for new music and has commissioned and premiered many works by contemporary composers. She has worked with composers such as John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Augusta Read Thomas to create new works for the flute. Throughout her career, Gilbert has been praised for her virtuosic playing, her musicality, and her dedication to the flute. She has become one of the most respected and sought-after flutists in the world, and her contributions to the world of classical music are immeasurable.More....
