Role:EnsembleSouthern Sinfonia is a classical music ensemble based in New Zealand. The group was founded in 1988 by conductor and music director, Donald Armstrong. The ensemble has since become one of the most respected and sought-after orchestras in the country, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The founding of Southern Sinfonia was a response to the lack of professional orchestras in the southern region of New Zealand. Armstrong, who had previously worked with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia, saw an opportunity to create a new ensemble that would serve the communities of Otago and Southland. With the support of local musicians and music lovers, he established Southern Sinfonia as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting classical music in the region. The ensemble's early years were marked by a series of successful concerts and collaborations with local artists and organizations. In 1990, Southern Sinfonia performed with the New Zealand Opera in a production of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," which was widely praised for its musical excellence. The following year, the ensemble embarked on its first national tour, performing in major cities throughout New Zealand. Over the years, Southern Sinfonia has attracted some of the most talented musicians in the country, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in music. The ensemble's current members include some of New Zealand's most accomplished instrumentalists, including violinist Miranda Adams, cellist Heleen du Plessis, and clarinetist Anna McGregor. One of the highlights of Southern Sinfonia's history was its performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The ensemble was invited to represent New Zealand at the Cultural Olympiad, a series of events showcasing the arts and culture of the participating countries. Southern Sinfonia performed a program of New Zealand and Australian music, including works by Douglas Lilburn, Peter Sculthorpe, and Ross Harris. The performance was broadcast live to millions of viewers around the world, and was widely praised for its energy and vitality. In addition to its live performances, Southern Sinfonia has also released several recordings over the years. The ensemble's first CD, "Southern Sinfonia Plays Mozart," was released in 1995 and featured some of Mozart's most beloved works, including his Symphony No. 40 and Piano Concerto No. 21. The CD was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish Southern Sinfonia as a major force in the New Zealand classical music scene. Southern Sinfonia has also been recognized for its contributions to the arts in New Zealand. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the arts by Pacific Island artists and organizations. The award was a testament to Southern Sinfonia's commitment to promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity in its programming and outreach efforts. Today, Southern Sinfonia continues to be a vital part of the New Zealand classical music scene. The ensemble performs regularly throughout the country, and has established itself as a leader in innovative programming and community engagement. With its talented musicians, dedicated staff, and passionate supporters, Southern Sinfonia is poised to continue making a significant impact on the world of classical music for years to come.More....
