The Young New Yorkers' Chorus (YNC) is a classical music ensemble based in New York City, known for its exceptional performances of choral music. The group was founded in 1988 by Michael Kerschner, a music educator and conductor, with the aim of providing young singers with an opportunity to perform challenging choral works and develop their musical skills. The YNC started as a small group of singers, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Under Kerschner's leadership, the ensemble became known for its high standards of musicianship and its commitment to performing a diverse range of choral music, from classical works to contemporary compositions. Over the years, the YNC has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations. The group has also toured extensively, performing in Europe, Asia, and South America. One of the highlights of the YNC's early years was its performance at the 1992 World Choral Symposium in Vancouver, Canada. The group was one of only a handful of American choirs invited to perform at the event, which brought together some of the world's top choral ensembles. In 1995, the YNC won first prize in the mixed choir category at the International Choral Festival in Budapest, Hungary. The group's performance was praised for its precision, clarity, and emotional depth. In 2000, the YNC was invited to perform at the White House for President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. The group performed a program of American choral music, including works by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. In 2003, Kerschner retired as the YNC's artistic director, and was succeeded by Michael A. Ciavaglia. Under Ciavaglia's leadership, the group continued to thrive, performing a wide range of choral works and collaborating with other musicians and ensembles. In 2010, the YNC performed at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The group's performance of the Canadian national anthem, "O Canada," was widely praised for its beauty and emotional power. In recent years, the YNC has continued to perform at a high level, earning critical acclaim for its performances of works by composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Brahms. The group has also commissioned new works by contemporary composers, and has collaborated with other artists and ensembles to create innovative and exciting performances. Today, the YNC is recognized as one of the premier choral ensembles in the United States, known for its exceptional musicianship, innovative programming, and commitment to musical excellence. The group continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world with its beautiful and powerful performances of choral music.
