Robert Brock was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Brock showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Brock's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires, at the age of six. Under her guidance, Brock developed a deep understanding and appreciation for classical music. At the age of 12, Brock made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major. The performance was a huge success, and Brock received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance marked the beginning of Brock's career as a classical pianist. Brock continued to study with Pires throughout his teenage years, and he also attended the Juilliard School in New York City. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Juilliard in 2007 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. During his time at Curtis, Brock won several prestigious awards, including the Curtis Institute of Music Concerto Competition and the Philadelphia Orchestra Greenfield Competition. These awards helped to establish Brock as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation. After completing his studies at Curtis, Brock began performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Brock's most memorable performances was his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2012. He played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. The performance was hailed as a triumph, and Brock received a standing ovation from the audience. In addition to his performances with orchestras, Brock is also an accomplished soloist and chamber musician. He has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Brock's repertoire is vast and includes works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He is known for his technical virtuosity and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he plays. In addition to his performing career, Brock is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at some of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Brock has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2014, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise for the future. He was also named a Steinway Artist in 2015, joining a select group of pianists who are recognized for their excellence in performance and dedication to the art of piano playing. Despite his many accomplishments, Brock remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to practice for several hours a day and is always looking for ways to improve his playing.
