Artist Info
Role:ConductorGenre:ChamberKeyboardGeneviève Soly is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of Baroque music. She was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1955, and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a music lover and her mother was a pianist, which inspired her to pursue a career in music. Soly began her musical education at the age of five, when she started taking piano lessons. She quickly showed a talent for music and began to excel in her studies. She continued her education at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec, where she studied piano, harpsichord, and organ. After completing her studies, Soly began to perform professionally as a soloist and chamber musician. She quickly gained a reputation for her virtuosic performances and her ability to bring out the nuances of Baroque music. She also became known for her innovative programming, which often included lesser-known works by Baroque composers. In 1984, Soly founded the Baroque music ensemble Les Idées heureuses, which quickly became one of the most respected Baroque ensembles in Canada. The ensemble specialized in the performance of Baroque music on period instruments, and Soly served as the ensemble's artistic director and harpsichordist. Under Soly's leadership, Les Idées heureuses performed extensively throughout Canada and Europe, and released several critically acclaimed recordings. The ensemble also collaborated with other leading Baroque ensembles, including the English Concert and the Academy of Ancient Music. In addition to her work with Les Idées heureuses, Soly has also performed as a soloist with many leading orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre Métropolitain. She has also performed at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Festival de musique de Saint-Riquier in France, the Festival de musique ancienne de Montréal, and the Boston Early Music Festival. Soly has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of Baroque music. In 1991, she was awarded the Prix Opus for Best Soloist of the Year by the Conseil québécois de la musique. In 1998, she was awarded the Prix Denise-Pelletier, which is the highest honor awarded by the government of Quebec for contributions to the arts. Soly has also been recognized for her work as a musicologist and music educator. She has published several books and articles on Baroque music, and has taught at several leading universities, including McGill University and the Université de Montréal. Despite her many accomplishments, Soly remains committed to her work as a performer and educator. She continues to perform regularly with Les Idées heureuses and as a soloist, and is dedicated to promoting the music of the Baroque era to new audiences.More....
