Jen-Ru Sun is a Taiwanese-American classical pianist and educator. She was born on August 22, 1979, in Taipei, Taiwan. Her parents were both music teachers, and they recognized her talent for music at a young age. She began playing the piano at the age of four and gave her first public performance at the age of six. Sun's family moved to the United States when she was nine years old, and she continued her music education there. She studied with renowned pianists such as Nelita True, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and Robert McDonald. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where she was a student of Kaplinsky. She then went on to earn her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with McDonald. Sun has won numerous awards and competitions throughout her career. In 1997, she won first prize in the Young Artists Piano Competition in New York City. She was also a finalist in the 2001 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the 2002 Cleveland International Piano Competition. In 2003, she won the grand prize in the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. Sun has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and the Missouri Symphony Orchestra. She has also given recitals in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei. One of Sun's most notable performances was her debut with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2001. She performed Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, and her performance was praised by critics for its "poise, sensitivity, and technical brilliance." She has also received critical acclaim for her performances of works by Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann. In addition to her performing career, Sun is also an accomplished educator. She has taught at the Manhattan School of Music, the Juilliard School Pre-College Division, and the University of Missouri. She is currently a professor of piano at the University of North Texas College of Music. Sun is known for her dedication to promoting classical music to a wider audience. She has given masterclasses and workshops to young musicians around the world, and she has also collaborated with other artists in interdisciplinary projects that combine music with other art forms.
