The Frank Devol Orchestra was a prominent classical music ensemble that was founded in the mid-20th century. The orchestra was named after its founder, Frank Devol, who was a renowned composer, arranger, and conductor. Devol was born in 1911 in Moundsville, West Virginia, and began his career in music as a trombonist in various big bands in the 1930s and 1940s. In the late 1940s, Devol began to focus more on arranging and composing music, and he soon became one of the most sought-after arrangers in the music industry. He worked with many of the top singers and musicians of the time, including Doris Day, Tony Bennett, and Ella Fitzgerald. Devol also composed music for films and television shows, including the theme song for the popular TV series "The Brady Bunch." In 1958, Devol formed his own orchestra, which quickly gained a reputation for its lush, romantic sound and its impeccable musicianship. The orchestra's main members included some of the top musicians in the industry, including trumpeter Al Hirt, saxophonist Boots Randolph, and pianist Floyd Cramer. One of the highlights of the Frank Devol Orchestra's career was its performance at the 1962 Newport Jazz Festival. The orchestra's performance was well-received by both critics and audiences, and it helped to cement the orchestra's reputation as one of the top classical music ensembles of the time. The Frank Devol Orchestra also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its career. In 1963, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement for its rendition of the song "Theme from 'The Apartment'." The orchestra also received several other Grammy nominations throughout the 1960s. Despite its success, the Frank Devol Orchestra disbanded in the late 1960s, as Devol began to focus more on his work as a composer and arranger. However, the orchestra's legacy lives on, and its lush, romantic sound continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
