Gary Lehman is a renowned American tenor who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on August 18, 1952, in the city of San Francisco, California, Lehman grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer, so it was only natural that Lehman would develop an interest in music from a young age. Lehman's musical journey began when he started singing in his church choir. He quickly realized that he had a natural talent for singing and decided to pursue it further. He started taking voice lessons and joined the San Francisco Boys Chorus, where he received formal training in music. After completing his high school education, Lehman enrolled at San Francisco State University, where he studied music. He continued to hone his skills as a singer and performed in various local productions. In 1978, he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which marked the beginning of his professional career as a classical singer. Lehman's breakthrough performance came in 1983 when he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera as Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen. His performance was widely acclaimed, and he quickly became a sought-after tenor in the opera world. He went on to perform in various productions at the San Francisco Opera, including La Boheme, Tosca, and Otello. In 1986, Lehman made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he played the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca. His performance was a huge success, and he was invited back to perform in several other productions, including Otello, La Boheme, and Turandot. Lehman's talent as a singer was not limited to the opera stage. He also performed in various concerts and recitals, where he showcased his versatility as a classical singer. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Lehman's most memorable performances was his portrayal of Siegfried in Wagner's Ring Cycle at the San Francisco Opera in 2011. The production was directed by Francesca Zambello and conducted by Donald Runnicles, and it received critical acclaim for its innovative staging and Lehman's powerful performance. Throughout his career, Lehman has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1991, he was awarded the Richard Tucker Award, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the opera world. He was also inducted into the San Francisco Opera Hall of Fame in 2014, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the company. Lehman's career as a classical singer spanned over three decades, and he retired from performing in 2014. However, his legacy as a talented and versatile tenor continues to inspire and influence young singers around the world.
