Period:RomanticModernGenre:KeyboardLiana Serbescu was a Romanian classical music artist who was born on December 22, 1938, in Bucharest, Romania. She was the daughter of a well-known Romanian composer, conductor, and musicologist, Constantin Silvestri, and a pianist, pianist and music teacher, Valentina Silvestri. Her parents were both highly respected in the Romanian music scene, and they instilled in Liana a love for music from a young age. Liana began her musical education at the age of six, studying piano with her mother. She showed great talent and dedication, and by the age of 12, she had already won several national piano competitions. However, Liana's true passion was singing, and she began studying voice with the renowned Romanian soprano, Maria Slătinaru-Nistor. In 1957, Liana made her debut as a soloist with the Romanian National Opera in Bucharest, singing the role of Micaela in Bizet's Carmen. Her performance was a great success, and she quickly became one of the most sought-after young singers in Romania. In 1959, she won first prize at the International Singing Competition in Toulouse, France, which launched her international career. Over the next few years, Liana performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She was known for her powerful and expressive voice, as well as her dramatic stage presence. Some of her most acclaimed roles included Tosca, Aida, and Leonora in Verdi's Il trovatore. In addition to her opera career, Liana was also a highly respected concert singer. She performed regularly with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Throughout her career, Liana received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1965, she was awarded the title of People's Artist of Romania, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in that country. She was also awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, First Class, by the Romanian government in 1971. Despite her success, Liana's career was not without its challenges. She was often criticized by the Romanian government for her international travels and her perceived lack of loyalty to the Communist regime. In 1977, she was banned from performing in Romania for several years, and she was forced to flee the country with her husband and children. Liana continued to perform and record throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but her career began to slow down as she entered her 60s. She retired from performing in 2000, but she remained active in the music world as a teacher and mentor to young singers. She also served as the president of the Romanian National Opera from 2001 to 2005. Liana Serbescu passed away on December 17, 2019, at the age of 80. She was remembered as one of Romania's greatest classical music artists, and her legacy continues to inspire young singers around the world.More....
