Bretagne Orchestra, also known as Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, is a classical music ensemble based in Rennes, France. The orchestra was founded in 1988 by the Regional Council of Brittany, with the aim of promoting classical music in the region and beyond. The orchestra's first conductor was Stefan Sanderling, who led the ensemble from 1988 to 1992. He was succeeded by Grant Llewellyn, who served as the orchestra's music director from 1992 to 2006. During his tenure, Llewellyn helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in France, and led the orchestra on numerous tours and recordings. In 2006, the orchestra appointed its current music director, Darrell Ang. Ang is a Singaporean conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the Bretagne Orchestra has continued to grow and develop, and has become known for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. The Bretagne Orchestra is made up of around 70 musicians, many of whom are from Brittany or other parts of France. The orchestra's members are highly skilled and experienced, and many have performed with other leading orchestras around the world. Over the years, the Bretagne Orchestra has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. The orchestra has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Renaud Capuçon, and cellist Gautier Capuçon. One of the highlights of the Bretagne Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2008 Proms in London. The orchestra performed a program of French music, including works by Debussy, Ravel, and Saint-Saëns, to critical acclaim. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and was later released on CD. The Bretagne Orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, which have received numerous awards and critical acclaim. In 2010, the orchestra's recording of Debussy's La Mer and Nocturnes, conducted by Darrell Ang, won the Diapason d'Or award. The orchestra has also recorded works by Ravel, Stravinsky, and other composers, and has received praise for its interpretations and sound quality. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Bretagne Orchestra is also committed to education and outreach. The orchestra regularly performs for school groups and other community organizations, and offers workshops and masterclasses for young musicians.
