The Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège et de la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles, also known as the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Liège, Belgium. The orchestra was founded in 1960 by Fernand Quinet, a Belgian conductor and composer, with the aim of promoting classical music in the region of Wallonia. The orchestra's early years were marked by financial difficulties and a lack of recognition, but it gradually gained a reputation for excellence under the leadership of conductors such as Pierre Bartholomée and Louis Langrée. In 1998, the orchestra merged with the Orchestre de la Communauté Française, another Belgian ensemble, to form the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège et de la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles. Today, the orchestra is led by Christian Arming, an Austrian conductor who has been its music director since 2011. The orchestra's main members include around 90 musicians, many of whom are Belgian or French. The orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. Over the years, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège et de la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Salzburg Festival. The orchestra has also recorded numerous albums, including works by Belgian composers such as César Franck and André Grétry. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 2013 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, as part of the BBC Proms festival. The orchestra performed a program of French music, including works by Debussy, Ravel, and Saint-Saëns, to critical acclaim. The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and later released on CD. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège et de la Communauté Wallonie-Bruxelles has also received many awards and honors over the years. In 2017, the orchestra was awarded the title of "Cultural Ambassador of Wallonia" by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, in recognition of its contributions to the region's cultural heritage.
