She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. Her father recognized her talent for music at an early age and began teaching her piano when she was just four years old. Helbig's musical education continued throughout her childhood and teenage years. She attended the Berlin Conservatory, where she studied piano, composition, and conducting. She also took private lessons with some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including Wilhelm Kempff and Artur Schnabel. In 1945, Helbig's life was forever changed when she and her family were forced to flee Berlin due to the war. They settled in Munich, where Helbig continued her musical studies at the Munich Conservatory. She graduated with honors in 1948 and began her career as a concert pianist. Helbig quickly gained a reputation as a talented and passionate performer. Her performances were known for their technical precision and emotional depth. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. In 1952, Helbig made her debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Helbig was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Helbig continued to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She also began recording her performances, and her recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas and Chopin's nocturnes became bestsellers. In 1960, Helbig was awarded the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. The competition was a major milestone in her career, and it solidified her reputation as one of the world's greatest pianists. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Helbig continued to perform and record, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards. She was particularly known for her performances of the works of Brahms, Schumann, and Liszt. In 1980, Helbig retired from performing due to health issues.
