Peter Willison is a renowned cellist and conductor who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on 22nd June 1949 in London, England, Willison showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He was a student at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist William Pleeth. Willison's talent as a cellist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1966, at the age of 17, he won the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, which helped to launch his career as a professional musician. After completing his studies at the Royal College of Music, Willison went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the English Chamber Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with many of these orchestras, showcasing his virtuosity and musicality. In addition to his work as a cellist, Willison also developed a passion for conducting. He studied conducting with Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Colin Davis, and went on to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Willison's career as a cellist was his performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1975. This performance was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and cemented Willison's reputation as one of the world's leading cellists. Willison's work as a conductor was also highly regarded, and he was appointed as the principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra in 1984. He held this position for 10 years, during which time he led the orchestra on many successful tours and recordings. In 1990, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music, and in 2001 he was awarded the Queen's Medal for Music.
