It was founded in 1937 by the French public radio broadcaster, Radiodiffusion Française, which later became Radio France. The orchestra's founding conductor was Eugène Bigot, who led the ensemble until 1944. He was succeeded by Manuel Rosenthal, who served as the orchestra's principal conductor until 1951. Other notable conductors who have led the orchestra include Lorin Maazel, Leonard Bernstein, and Myung-Whun Chung. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France is made up of approximately 120 musicians, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
