Nils Lindberg is a Swedish composer, arranger, and pianist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on June 27, 1933, in Katrineholm, Sweden, Lindberg grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a choir singer. Lindberg started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Lindberg's formal music education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He later continued his studies at the University of Uppsala, where he earned a degree in musicology. During his time at university, Lindberg became interested in jazz music and started playing in jazz bands. In the 1960s, Lindberg became a prominent figure in the Swedish jazz scene. He played with several jazz bands, including the Swedish Radio Jazz Group and the Swedish Jazz Kings. Lindberg's jazz compositions were well-received, and he won several awards for his work. In the 1970s, Lindberg shifted his focus to classical music. He began composing orchestral works, choral music, and chamber music. Lindberg's classical compositions were heavily influenced by his jazz background, and he often incorporated jazz elements into his works. One of Lindberg's most famous works is his "Jazz Mass," which he composed in 1973. The piece combines traditional liturgical music with jazz harmonies and rhythms. The "Jazz Mass" has been performed all over the world and has become a staple of the choral repertoire. Lindberg's other notable works include his "Swedish Rhapsody," which was commissioned by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and his "Concerto for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra," which was commissioned by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Lindberg's compositions have been performed by orchestras and choirs all over the world, including in the United States, Japan, and Australia. In addition to his work as a composer, Lindberg has also been a prolific arranger. He has arranged music for jazz bands, orchestras, and choirs, and his arrangements have been performed by some of the world's leading ensembles. Lindberg's contributions to the world of classical music have not gone unnoticed. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Swedish Royal Academy of Music's Medal of Honor and the Swedish Society of Composers' Award for Best Composer. Despite his success, Lindberg remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to compose and arrange music, and his works continue to be performed and celebrated by musicians and audiences around the world.
