The Hollywood String Quartet was a renowned classical music ensemble that was active from 1939 to 1961. The ensemble consisted of first violinist Felix Slatkin, second violinist Paul Shure, violist Alvin Dinkin, and cellist Eleanor Aller. Felix Slatkin was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1915. He began playing the violin at a young age and quickly showed a natural talent for music. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and later became a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. In 1939, he moved to Los Angeles and founded the Hollywood String Quartet. Paul Shure was born in Los Angeles in 1916. He also began playing the violin at a young age and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music. He joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 1938 and became a member of the Hollywood String Quartet the following year. Alvin Dinkin was born in New York City in 1918. He began playing the viola at a young age and studied at the Juilliard School of Music. He moved to Los Angeles in 1940 and joined the Hollywood String Quartet. Eleanor Aller was born in Chicago in 1917. She began playing the cello at a young age and studied at the Juilliard School of Music. She moved to Los Angeles in 1940 and joined the Hollywood String Quartet. The Hollywood String Quartet quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring out the emotional depth of classical music. They performed a wide range of repertoire, from the works of classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary composers like Bartok and Shostakovich. One of the highlights of the Hollywood String Quartet's career was their performance of Beethoven's complete string quartets at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. in 1951. The quartet was the first American ensemble to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets, and their performance was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. The Hollywood String Quartet also recorded extensively, producing over 200 recordings during their career. Their recordings were highly regarded for their technical excellence and their ability to capture the emotional depth of the music.
