JapanYamato Ensemble is a classical music group that has been captivating audiences with their unique blend of traditional Japanese music and contemporary Western influences. The group was founded in 1993 by Chieko Kojima, a renowned dancer and musician who has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the art of Japanese music and dance. Kojima was born in Tokyo in 1953 and began studying traditional Japanese dance at the age of three. She quickly developed a passion for the art form and went on to study under some of the most respected masters in the field. In addition to dance, Kojima also studied the shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, and became a skilled musician in her own right. In 1981, Kojima joined the world-renowned taiko drumming group Ondekoza, which was founded by legendary musician and composer Den Tagayasu. Ondekoza was known for their high-energy performances and innovative approach to traditional Japanese music, and Kojima quickly became one of the group's most talented and respected members. After several years with Ondekoza, Kojima decided to strike out on her own and form her own group. She founded Yamato Ensemble in 1993, with the goal of creating a new style of music that blended traditional Japanese music with contemporary Western influences. The group's early performances were well-received, and they quickly gained a reputation for their innovative approach to traditional Japanese music. They began touring extensively throughout Japan and soon gained a following of dedicated fans. In 1998, Yamato Ensemble released their first album, "Yamato: The Drummers of Japan." The album was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the group as one of the most exciting and innovative acts in the world of classical music. Over the years, Yamato Ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of traditional Japanese music, incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and other Western genres into their performances. They have released several more albums, including "Yamato: The Art of Japanese Music and Dance" and "Yamato: The Way of the Drum." In addition to their recordings, Yamato Ensemble has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. They have also collaborated with a number of other musicians and artists, including the renowned Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Throughout their career, Yamato Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the world of classical music. In 2002, they were awarded the prestigious Japan Foundation Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting Japanese culture around the world. Despite their success, Yamato Ensemble remains committed to their mission of preserving and promoting traditional Japanese music and dance. They continue to tour extensively, bringing their unique blend of music and dance to audiences around the world.More....
