Kayo Iwama is a highly accomplished classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist, collaborative artist, and educator. Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1981, Iwama began playing the piano at the age of three and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Iwama moved to the United States to pursue further education and career opportunities. She enrolled in the Master of Music program at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Yoheved Kaplinsky. During her time at Juilliard, Iwama won several awards and competitions, including the Gina Bachauer Piano Scholarship Competition and the Juilliard Concerto Competition. Following her graduation from Juilliard, Iwama continued to build her career as a pianist and collaborative artist. She has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, both as a soloist and as a member of various chamber music ensembles. Some of her most notable performances include appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. In addition to her performing career, Iwama is also a highly respected educator. She has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival and School. She is currently on the faculty at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, where she teaches piano and chamber music. Throughout her career, Iwama has received numerous awards and accolades for her musical achievements. In addition to her early competition wins, she has been the recipient of several prestigious grants and fellowships, including the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans and the Gilmore Young Artist Award. She has also been recognized for her contributions to the field of music education, receiving the Juilliard School's prestigious William Schuman Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music Education in 2017. Despite her many accomplishments, Iwama remains dedicated to her craft and continues to strive for excellence in all aspects of her musical career. She is known for her technical precision, musical sensitivity, and collaborative spirit, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented and versatile pianists of her generation.
