The Sofia Orthodox Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their soulful performances for over 60 years. The choir was founded in 1951 in Sofia, Bulgaria, by the renowned Bulgarian composer and conductor, Professor Dobri Hristov. The choir has since become one of the most celebrated ensembles in the world, known for their exceptional performances of Orthodox liturgical music. The choir's early years were marked by a series of successful performances in Bulgaria and across Europe. In 1955, the choir was invited to perform at the International Festival of Orthodox Music in Moscow, where they received critical acclaim for their performance of Hristov's "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom." This performance marked the beginning of the choir's international career, and they soon became regular performers at festivals and concerts across Europe. Over the years, the choir has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, and Zubin Mehta. One of the choir's most memorable performances was their 1985 concert at the Vatican, where they performed for Pope John Paul II. The concert was a celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the Christianization of Bulgaria, and the choir's performance of Orthodox liturgical music was a highlight of the event. The choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1968, they were awarded the Grand Prix at the International Festival of Orthodox Music in Moscow, and in 1971, they received the Order of Cyril and Methodius, one of Bulgaria's highest honors. In 2001, the choir was awarded the UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts, in recognition of their contribution to the preservation and promotion of Orthodox liturgical music. Despite their many achievements, the choir has remained committed to their mission of preserving and promoting Orthodox liturgical music. They have recorded numerous albums over the years, including their acclaimed recordings of Hristov's "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom" and "Liturgy of St. Basil the Great." These recordings have helped to introduce Orthodox liturgical music to a wider audience, and have cemented the choir's reputation as one of the world's leading interpreters of this genre. Today, the Sofia Orthodox Choir continues to inspire audiences with their soulful performances of Orthodox liturgical music. They remain committed to their mission of preserving and promoting this rich musical tradition, and their performances continue to be a testament to the power and beauty of this timeless music.
