Lola Bobesco was a Romanian-born violinist who became one of the most celebrated classical music artists of the 20th century. Born on January 1, 1921, in Bucharest, Romania, Lola Bobesco was the daughter of a violinist and a pianist. Her father, George Enescu, was a renowned composer and violinist, and her mother, Maria Cantacuzino, was a pianist. Lola Bobesco grew up in a musical family and began playing the violin at a young age. Lola Bobesco's talent was recognized early on, and she began performing in public at the age of six. She studied at the Bucharest Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory, where she studied with the famous violinist Jacques Thibaud. Lola Bobesco's talent and hard work paid off, and she won several awards and prizes throughout her career. Lola Bobesco made her debut as a soloist in 1940, performing with the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra. She quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso violinist and began performing with orchestras around the world. She was a member of the Pro Arte Quartet, one of the most famous string quartets of the 20th century. The Pro Arte Quartet was founded in 1912 and was based in Brussels, Belgium. Lola Bobesco joined the quartet in 1959 and remained a member until 1963. During her time with the quartet, Lola Bobesco performed all over the world and recorded several albums. Lola Bobesco's career was not without its challenges. She lived through World War II and the Communist regime in Romania, which made it difficult for her to travel and perform. However, Lola Bobesco persevered and continued to perform and record throughout her career. Lola Bobesco's talent and hard work were recognized with several awards and honors. She was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque in 1953 for her recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. She was also awarded the Order of the Crown of Romania in 1964 and the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 1977. Lola Bobesco continued to perform and record until her death in 2003. She left behind a legacy of beautiful music and inspired generations of musicians.
