He graduated with a degree in cello performance in 1968. After graduation, he began his career as a cellist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles in France and abroad. Charbonnier's career took off in the 1970s when he became a member of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, a contemporary music ensemble founded by Pierre Boulez. He performed with the ensemble for several years, playing a wide range of contemporary music by composers such as Boulez, Stockhausen, and Ligeti. In addition to his work with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Charbonnier was also a member of the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de France. He performed as a soloist with these orchestras, playing works by composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann. Charbonnier was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly admired for his performances of the cello suites by Bach, which he played with great sensitivity and nuance. Charbonnier's career was marked by many highlights, including his performances at the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Berlin Festival.
