Period:ModernGenre:ChamberMolly Alicia Barth is a renowned flutist and educator in the world of classical music. Born on August 23, 1978, in Corvallis, Oregon, Barth grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a singer. Barth started playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Barth attended the University of Oregon, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance. She then went on to pursue her Master of Music degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. During her time at the conservatory, Barth studied under the tutelage of Bradley Garner, a renowned flutist and educator. After completing her studies, Barth began her professional career as a flutist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. In 2001, Barth joined the eighth blackbird ensemble, a contemporary music group based in Chicago. With the ensemble, Barth performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Barbican Centre in London. In addition to her work with the eighth blackbird ensemble, Barth has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many renowned composers, including Steve Reich, Jennifer Higdon, and John Luther Adams. Throughout her career, Barth has received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music. In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding instrumentalists who have demonstrated exceptional talent and potential for a significant career in classical music. She was also awarded the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition in 1998 and the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 2000. In addition to her work as a performer, Barth is also a dedicated educator. She has served on the faculty of the University of Oregon, the University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Michigan. She is currently a professor of flute at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Barth is also an advocate for contemporary music and has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers. She has worked closely with composers such as Marcos Balter, David Lang, and Ken Ueno to create new works for the flute. In 2018, Barth released her debut solo album, "Bloodroot," which features works by contemporary composers such as Marcos Balter, Dai Fujikura, and Du Yun. The album received critical acclaim and was praised for its innovative and adventurous approach to contemporary music.
