Born in Berkeley, California in 1981, Nagano was raised in a family of musicians. Her father, Kent Nagano, is a world-renowned conductor, and her mother, Mari Kodama, is a pianist. From a young age, Nagano showed a natural talent for music, and began studying piano at the age of three. Nagano's early musical education was shaped by her parents' influence. She studied with her mother, who instilled in her a deep love of the music of Mozart and Beethoven. Nagano also had the opportunity to attend rehearsals and performances with her father, who was then the music director of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. These experiences exposed her to a wide range of musical styles and helped to shape her musical sensibility. As a child, Nagano showed remarkable talent on the piano.
