The South Australian Symphony Orchestra (SASO) is a classical music ensemble based in Adelaide, South Australia. Founded in 1936, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent cultural institutions in the state, known for its high-quality performances and commitment to promoting classical music to a wider audience. The SASO was originally established as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, with the aim of providing a platform for local musicians to showcase their talents and perform classical music for the community. The orchestra's first concert was held on August 6, 1936, at the Adelaide Town Hall, and was conducted by William Cade. Over the years, the SASO has undergone several name changes and transformations. In 1949, the orchestra became known as the South Australian Symphony Orchestra, and in 1975, it merged with the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra to form the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. However, in 1996, the SASO was re-established as a separate entity, with a renewed focus on promoting classical music in South Australia. The SASO has had many talented musicians and conductors over the years, including notable figures such as William Cade, Henry Krips, and Patrick Thomas. Today, the orchestra is led by Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Nicholas Carter, who has been praised for his innovative programming and dynamic performances. One of the SASO's most significant achievements was its performance at the 1988 Adelaide Festival of Arts, where it played a series of concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra. The SASO also performed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where it played at the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony. In addition to its major performances, the SASO has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2016, the orchestra won the Helpmann Award for Best Symphony Orchestra Concert for its performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The SASO has also been recognized for its commitment to education and community outreach, receiving the 2017 Ruby Award for Best Community or Regional Event for its "Symphony Under the Stars" concert series. Today, the SASO continues to be a vital part of the South Australian cultural landscape, with a busy schedule of concerts and events throughout the year. The orchestra's repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from the works of Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary composers such as John Adams and Arvo Pärt. In recent years, the SASO has also embraced new technologies and digital platforms to reach a wider audience. The orchestra has launched a series of online concerts and live streams, allowing music lovers from around the world to experience its performances from the comfort of their own homes. Overall, the South Australian Symphony Orchestra has a rich history and a bright future ahead. With its talented musicians, innovative programming, and commitment to promoting classical music to a wider audience, the SASO is sure to continue to be a major force in the world of classical music for many years to come.
