The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) is a classical music ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1979 by conductor Benjamin Zander, the BPO has become one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the United States. Benjamin Zander, a British-born conductor and pianist, founded the BPO with the goal of creating a world-class orchestra that would inspire and educate audiences through the power of classical music. Zander had previously served as the conductor of the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and he brought his passion for music education to the BPO. From its earliest days, the BPO was known for its innovative programming and commitment to music education. Zander believed that classical music had the power to transform lives, and he worked tirelessly to bring that message to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Over the years, the BPO has attracted some of the most talented musicians in the world. The orchestra's main members include a mix of seasoned professionals and up-and-coming young musicians, all of whom share Zander's passion for music and commitment to excellence. One of the highlights of the BPO's early years was its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," in 1984. The performance was a huge success, and it helped establish the BPO as a major force in the classical music world. In the years that followed, the BPO continued to push the boundaries of classical music performance. The orchestra's performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky were particularly well-received, and the BPO became known for its powerful and emotional interpretations of these classic works. In addition to its regular concert series, the BPO has also performed at a number of prestigious venues and events. The orchestra has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the BBC Proms in London, among others. The BPO has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1999, the orchestra was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, which recognizes outstanding programs that promote the arts and humanities among young people. The BPO was also named "Best Classical Music Ensemble" by Boston Magazine in 2017. Despite its many accomplishments, the BPO remains committed to its mission of inspiring and educating audiences through the power of classical music. The orchestra continues to push the boundaries of classical music performance, and it remains one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the world.
