He was born in the late 13th century in the city of Durazzo, which is now part of modern-day Albania. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Koukouzeles was a talented musician from a young age, and he quickly rose to prominence in the Byzantine court. He served as the chief cantor of the Hagia Sophia, the most important church in Constantinople, and he was also a member of the imperial choir. In addition to his musical talents, Koukouzeles was also a skilled calligrapher and painter, and he was known for his beautiful illuminated manuscripts. Koukouzeles is best known for his compositions of Byzantine chant, which are still performed today in Orthodox churches around the world. His music is characterized by its intricate melodies and complex harmonies, which reflect the influence of both Eastern and Western musical traditions. Koukouzeles was also known for his use of the ison, a sustained drone note that provides a foundation for the melody. One of Koukouzeles' most famous works is the Cherubic Hymn, which is sung during the Divine Liturgy in Orthodox churches. The hymn is a beautiful example of Byzantine chant, with its soaring melodies and intricate harmonies. Another notable work is the Akathist Hymn, a long hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary that is sung during Lent. Koukouzeles' music was highly influential in the Byzantine Empire, and it had a lasting impact on the development of Orthodox music. His compositions were widely copied and performed, and they helped to establish the Byzantine musical tradition as a distinct form of classical music. Despite his success as a composer, Koukouzeles' life was not without its challenges. He lived during a time of political and religious upheaval in the Byzantine Empire, and he was often caught up in the conflicts of the day. In 1341, he was accused of supporting a rebellion against the emperor, and he was exiled to the island of Lemnos. He was later pardoned and allowed to return to Constantinople, but he continued to face persecution and was eventually forced to flee the city. Koukouzeles spent the last years of his life in the city of Thessaloniki, where he continued to compose music and teach students. He died in the early 14th century, but his legacy lived on through his music. Today, his compositions are still performed and studied by musicians around the world, and he is remembered as one of the greatest composers of Byzantine music.More....
