He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Pernutz showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Pernutz's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He also studied with renowned pianists such as Alfred Brendel and Wilhelm Kempff. Pernutz's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. He won his first piano competition at the age of eight and went on to win several more throughout his teenage years. In 1963, he won the prestigious International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna, which launched his career as a professional pianist. Throughout his career, Pernutz was known for his exceptional technique and musicality. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert.
