Wadsworth began his musical career as a trombonist, playing in various jazz bands in Manchester. He later moved to London, where he became a session musician, playing on recordings for artists such as The Beatles, Elton John, and David Bowie. He also played in the orchestra for the West End production of the musical Hair. In the 1970s, Wadsworth began to focus more on composing and arranging. He worked on numerous film and television scores, including the theme music for the popular British TV series The Two Ronnies. He also arranged music for the BBC Radio Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Wadsworth's most significant contributions to classical music was his work on the soundtrack for the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
