The quartet was founded in 1999 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Alvarez Quartet were violinists Annaliesa Place and Karla Donehew-Perez, violist James Dunham, and cellist Gregory Sauer. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and ensembles in the world. They came together with a shared vision to create a quartet that would showcase their individual talents while also highlighting the beauty and complexity of chamber music. The quartet's name, Alvarez, was chosen in honor of the late composer and music educator, Luis Alvarez. The quartet's founding members had all studied with Alvarez at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and felt that his influence had played a significant role in their musical development. From the beginning, the Alvarez Quartet was committed to exploring a wide range of repertoire, from the classical works of Haydn and Mozart to the contemporary compositions of living composers. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative programming and their ability to bring new life to familiar works. One of the highlights of the Alvarez Quartet's early career was their performance at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition. The quartet was awarded the Grand Prize, as well as the prize for Best Performance of a Canadian Work. This prestigious competition is known for launching the careers of many successful chamber ensembles, and the Alvarez Quartet's win helped to establish them as one of the most exciting young ensembles of their generation. In the years that followed, the Alvarez Quartet continued to build their reputation as one of the most dynamic and innovative chamber ensembles in the world. They performed at major concert halls and festivals throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, and collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time. One of the quartet's most notable collaborations was with the legendary pianist Menahem Pressler, who joined them for a series of performances of Schumann's Piano Quintet. Pressler, who was a founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio, was impressed by the quartet's musicianship and their ability to work together as a cohesive unit. He praised their "sensitivity, intelligence, and musicality," and said that working with them was "a joy and a privilege." The Alvarez Quartet has also been recognized for their commitment to contemporary music. They have premiered numerous works by living composers, including John Harbison, Jennifer Higdon, and Gabriela Lena Frank. In 2010, they were awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to contemporary music and innovative programming. Throughout their career, the Alvarez Quartet has released several critically acclaimed recordings.More....
