Demarre McGill is a renowned classical flutist who has made a name for himself in the music industry through his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft. Born on August 26, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois, Demarre grew up in a family of musicians. His mother, Ida McGill, was a singer, and his father, Edward McGill, was a bassist. Demarre's older brother, Anthony McGill, is also a renowned classical clarinetist. Demarre's interest in music began at a young age, and he started playing the flute when he was seven years old. He attended the Merit School of Music in Chicago, where he studied under the tutelage of Susan Levitin. Demarre's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a standout student at the school. After completing his studies at the Merit School of Music, Demarre went on to attend the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. Demarre continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York, where he received his Master of Music degree. Throughout his career, Demarre has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He has been the principal flutist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony, and the Florida Orchestra. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. One of Demarre's most notable performances was at the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009. He performed alongside his brother, Anthony, and pianist Gabriela Montero. The trio performed a piece by John Williams called "Air and Simple Gifts." Demarre has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for a solo career. He was also a winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1998. In addition to his work as a performer, Demarre is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently the principal flutist for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and serves as a faculty member at the University of Washington School of Music. Demarre is also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the classical music industry. He is a founding member of the Myriad Trio, which is made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds.
