Born on August 14, 1952, in Berlin, Germany, Stier showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Stier's career as a conductor began in 1978 when he was appointed as the assistant conductor of the Berlin State Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his talent and was soon appointed as the principal conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Stier's tenure with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra was marked by several successful performances, including a critically acclaimed performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In 1985, Stier was appointed as the principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. During his time with the orchestra, he led several successful tours and recordings, including a recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which received widespread critical acclaim. Stier's success as a conductor continued to grow, and he was soon invited to conduct several major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
