Remix Ensemble is a contemporary classical music group based in Porto, Portugal. The ensemble was founded in 2000 by the Casa da Música, a concert hall and cultural center in Porto. The group is made up of around 20 musicians, including string players, wind players, percussionists, and pianists. The ensemble's mission is to perform contemporary classical music, with a focus on new works by living composers. The group has commissioned and premiered works by a number of prominent composers, including Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, and Steve Reich. One of the ensemble's early highlights was a performance at the 2001 Venice Biennale, where they performed works by Portuguese composer Emmanuel Nunes. The group has also performed at a number of other major festivals and venues, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Barbican Centre in London. In addition to their performances, Remix Ensemble has also been recognized for their recordings. The group's recording of Magnus Lindberg's "Kraft" was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 2004, and their recording of works by Portuguese composer Cláudio Carneyro was awarded the Prémio Carlos Paredes in 2006. Over the years, Remix Ensemble has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians and conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, and Matthias Pintscher. The group has also worked with a number of visual artists, including Bill Viola and Rui Chafes, to create multimedia performances that combine music and visual art. In recent years, Remix Ensemble has continued to push the boundaries of contemporary classical music, commissioning and performing new works by a diverse range of composers. The group's commitment to new music and innovative programming has made them one of the most exciting and dynamic classical music ensembles in Europe.
