Georges Boulanger was a French composer and conductor who lived from 1837 to 1891. He was born in Paris, France, and showed an early interest in music. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Boulanger began his musical education at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Ambroise Thomas and orchestration with François Bazin. He was a talented student and won several prizes for his compositions. After completing his studies, he worked as a conductor and composer in various cities in France. One of Boulanger's most significant works is his Symphony in B-flat major, which he composed in 1874. The symphony is notable for its use of brass instruments, which were not commonly used in symphonic music at the time. The work was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped establish Boulanger as a leading composer of his time. Boulanger also composed several operas, including La Sirène, which premiered in 1884. The opera tells the story of a mermaid who falls in love with a human and is ultimately betrayed by him. The work features lush orchestration and beautiful melodies, and it was a critical success. In addition to his work as a composer, Boulanger was also a respected conductor. He conducted the premiere of Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson et Dalila in 1877 and was known for his interpretations of the works of Hector Berlioz. Despite his success as a composer and conductor, Boulanger struggled with depression and alcoholism throughout his life. He died in 1891 at the age of 54. Today, Boulanger is remembered as one of the most important French composers of the 19th century. His works are still performed and recorded, and his influence can be heard in the music of later composers such as Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
