Genevieve Lang is a renowned Australian classical harpist, composer, and educator. She was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1983, and grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, John Lang, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Susan Blake, was a pianist and music teacher. Genevieve began playing the harp at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Genevieve's early musical education was at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she studied with harpist Louise Johnson. She later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. She also studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Isabelle Moretti, one of the world's leading harpists. Genevieve's career as a professional musician began while she was still a student. She performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and was a finalist in the ABC Young Performer of the Year Awards. After completing her studies in London, she returned to Australia and quickly established herself as one of the country's leading harpists. One of Genevieve's most notable performances was at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She also performed at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Opera House's 40th anniversary celebrations in 2013, and has been a regular performer at the Sydney Festival and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. In addition to her work as a performer, Genevieve is also an accomplished composer. She has written music for film, television, and theater, and has released several albums of her own compositions. Her music is known for its ethereal quality and its use of unusual harmonies and textures. Genevieve is also a dedicated educator, and has taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music. She is passionate about promoting the harp as a serious instrument and encouraging young musicians to pursue careers in classical music. Throughout her career, Genevieve has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2007, she was awarded the Freedman Fellowship, one of Australia's most prestigious awards for young artists. She was also a finalist in the APRA Art Music Awards in 2012 and 2013, and was awarded the APRA Professional Development Award in 2014. Genevieve continues to be an active performer, composer, and educator, and is widely regarded as one of Australia's most talented and innovative classical musicians. Her dedication to her craft and her passion for music have made her a beloved figure in the Australian classical music scene, and her influence will no doubt continue to be felt for many years to come.
