He was born on April 14, 1934, in Paris, France, to Russian parents, Vladimir Nabokov and Vera Nabokov. Dmitri spent his childhood in Europe and the United States, where his family moved after fleeing the Russian Revolution. Dmitri showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied music at Harvard University and later at the New England Conservatory of Music. He also studied literature and languages, which would later become important in his career as a writer and translator. In the 1950s, Dmitri began performing as a pianist and quickly gained recognition for his talent. He performed with many orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, often playing the works of his father, Vladimir Nabokov. In addition to his career as a musician, Dmitri was also a writer and translator. He translated many of his father's works into Russian and wrote several books of his own, including a memoir about his father, titled "On Revisiting the Past." He also wrote a novel, "The Enchanter," which was later revealed to be an early version of his father's famous novel, "Lolita." Dmitri's career as a musician and writer was marked by many highlights and awards. In 1962, he won the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition, which helped launch his career as a pianist. He also received many awards for his writing, including the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 2000. Throughout his career, Dmitri remained dedicated to promoting the works of his father, Vladimir Nabokov. He often performed his father's music and translated his works into Russian. He also worked to preserve his father's legacy by donating his father's papers to libraries and museums. Dmitri Nabokov passed away on February 22, 2012, at the age of 77.
