He was born on August 25, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, to a family of musicians. His father was a clarinetist, and his mother was a pianist. Topilow grew up in a musical environment and started playing the clarinet at the age of nine. Topilow's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a sought-after musician in his hometown. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of Robert Marcellus, the principal clarinetist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Topilow graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1969 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at Indiana University. After completing his studies, Topilow joined the Denver Symphony Orchestra as the principal clarinetist. He held this position for four years before moving to the Cleveland Orchestra, where he played as a clarinetist for 37 years. During his time with the Cleveland Orchestra, Topilow also served as the assistant conductor and the principal pops conductor. Topilow's career as a conductor began in 1979 when he was asked to conduct the Akron Symphony Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed as the music director of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra in 1980. Topilow held this position for 23 years and transformed the orchestra into one of the most popular pops orchestras in the country. In addition to his work with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Topilow has conducted numerous other orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. Topilow's talent as a conductor has been recognized with numerous awards and honors.
