He was the son of a gardener and a housemaid, and his family was not wealthy. Despite this, Jones showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at a young age. Jones' musical talent was recognized by a local nobleman, who provided him with a scholarship to study music in London. Jones moved to London in 1766 and began studying under the renowned composer William Boyce. He quickly became known for his musical abilities and was soon performing in concerts throughout the city. In 1769, Jones was appointed as the music master for the Earl of Northumberland's household. This position allowed him to compose music for the Earl's private concerts and gave him the opportunity to work with some of the most talented musicians of the time. Jones' first major composition was his "Six Grand Overtures," which he wrote in 1770. These overtures were well-received and helped establish Jones as a composer of note. He continued to compose music for the Earl of Northumberland and other wealthy patrons, including the Prince of Wales. In 1772, Jones was appointed as the music director for the Covent Garden Theatre. This position allowed him to compose music for the theatre's productions and gave him the opportunity to work with some of the most talented actors and singers of the time. Jones' compositions for the theatre were well-received, and he became known for his ability to create music that perfectly complemented the action on stage. One of Jones' most famous compositions is his "Suite in D Major," which he wrote in 1779. This suite is a collection of six pieces that showcase Jones' ability to create music that is both beautiful and complex. The suite was well-received and has remained a popular piece of classical music to this day. Jones continued to compose music throughout his life, and his works were performed in concerts and theatres throughout Europe.
