The Brno Philharmonic Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. The chorus has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, and has established itself as one of the premier choral groups in Europe. The Brno Philharmonic Chorus was founded in 1935 by the Czech composer and conductor Jan Kunc. Kunc was a prominent figure in the Czech music scene, and had previously served as the conductor of the Brno Opera. He founded the chorus with the goal of creating a world-class ensemble that could perform the great choral works of the classical repertoire. In its early years, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus faced many challenges. The group was formed during a time of political upheaval in Europe, and the outbreak of World War II in 1939 disrupted the chorus's activities. However, the group persevered, and by the end of the war had established itself as a leading choral ensemble in the Czech Republic. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus continued to grow and develop. The group performed regularly with the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, and also collaborated with other leading orchestras and conductors in Europe. During this time, the chorus gained a reputation for its precision and musicality, and became known for its performances of works by Czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus continued to expand its repertoire and reach. The group performed extensively throughout Europe, and also toured in Asia and North America. During this time, the chorus collaborated with many leading conductors, including Sir Charles Mackerras, Jiří Bělohlávek, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of the Brno Philharmonic Chorus's career came in 1990, when the group performed at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Italy. The chorus's performance of the Italian national anthem was widely praised, and helped to raise the group's profile on the international stage. In recent years, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus has continued to build on its legacy of excellence. The group has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. The chorus has also continued to collaborate with leading conductors and orchestras, and has recorded extensively for major record labels. Throughout its history, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus has received many accolades and awards. In 1965, the group was awarded the title of "Laureate of the International Festival of Choral Music" in Arezzo, Italy. In 1995, the chorus was awarded the prestigious "Golden Prague" award for its contribution to the development of Czech music. And in 2015, the group was awarded the "Czech Music Prize" for its outstanding achievements in the field of classical music. Today, the Brno Philharmonic Chorus remains one of the most respected and admired choral ensembles in the world. The group's commitment to excellence and its dedication to the performance of great choral works continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike.
