The MDR Symphony Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Leipzig, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1915 as the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra, and has since become one of the most respected and celebrated orchestras in Europe. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of talented conductors and musicians, including Hermann Abendroth, Herbert Kegel, and Kurt Masur. Under their leadership, the orchestra developed a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary music, and became a fixture in the German music scene. One of the orchestra's most notable performances came in 1964, when it premiered the Symphony No. 7 by the German composer Hans Werner Henze. The piece, which was commissioned by the orchestra, was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the MDR Symphony Orchestra as a leading force in contemporary classical music. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the orchestra continued to build on its reputation for excellence, performing regularly at major music festivals and concert halls throughout Europe. In 1989, the orchestra made its debut at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. The 1990s saw a period of transition for the orchestra, as it adapted to the changing political and cultural landscape of post-reunification Germany. In 1992, the orchestra changed its name to the MDR Symphony Orchestra, reflecting its affiliation with the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting network. Under the leadership of conductor Fabio Luisi, the orchestra continued to thrive in the new millennium, performing a wide range of classical and contemporary works to critical acclaim. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of the complete symphonies of Johannes Brahms, cementing its reputation as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. In recent years, the MDR Symphony Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, collaborating with a diverse range of artists and composers to create innovative and exciting new works. In 2019, the orchestra premiered a new piece by the German composer Jörg Widmann, which was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike. Today, the MDR Symphony Orchestra remains one of the most respected and celebrated classical music ensembles in the world, with a rich history of innovation, excellence, and artistic achievement. Whether performing the works of the great masters or exploring new frontiers in contemporary music, the orchestra continues to inspire and delight audiences around the globe.
