Consuelo Sherba was born on August 22, 1954, in San Francisco, California. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a violinist. From a young age, Sherba showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Sherba's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking lessons with renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and later studied at the Juilliard School in New York City. In 1976, Sherba joined the San Francisco Symphony as a first violinist. She quickly established herself as a talented musician and was soon promoted to assistant concertmaster. During her time with the San Francisco Symphony, Sherba performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the Grammy Award-winning recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 8. In addition to her work with the San Francisco Symphony, Sherba was also a founding member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. The ensemble was formed in 1992 and quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Sherba served as the ensemble's artistic director and performed in many of its concerts. Throughout her career, Sherba was recognized for her talent and contributions to the classical music world. She received numerous awards and honors, including the San Francisco Symphony's Outstanding Musician Award and the California Arts Council's Artist Fellowship. One of Sherba's most memorable performances was her solo debut with the San Francisco Symphony in 1985. She performed Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, to critical acclaim. The San Francisco Chronicle praised her performance, saying, "Sherba's playing was marked by a sweet, singing tone and a graceful, unforced phrasing that made the music seem to flow effortlessly from her instrument." Sherba also performed as a soloist with other orchestras, including the Oakland Symphony and the Marin Symphony. She was known for her expressive and emotional performances, which captivated audiences and critics alike. In addition to her work as a performer, Sherba was also a dedicated teacher. She taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the University of California, Berkeley, and was known for her ability to inspire and motivate her students. Sadly, Sherba passed away on December 28, 2019, at the age of 65. Her death was a great loss to the classical music community, and she was remembered by colleagues and fans as a talented musician and a kind and generous person.
