Born on December 22, 1978, in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Sbarcea showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, where he earned a degree in piano performance. After completing his studies, Sbarcea began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and competitions throughout Europe. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and musical sensitivity, and was soon invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a pianist, Sbarcea also began to explore his interest in conducting. He studied with some of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim, and soon began to make a name for himself as a conductor as well. He was appointed as the principal conductor of the Romanian National Opera in 2005, and has since conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Sbarcea's career as a composer began in the early 2000s, when he began to write music for his own performances. His compositions quickly gained recognition for their originality and emotional depth, and he was soon commissioned to write music for other performers and ensembles.
